Shopify Shipping Strategy: Flat, Free or Calculated Rates?

Updated , first published · 5 min read

A Shopify shipping strategy decides who pays for delivery and how the price is shown: a flat rate you set, free shipping you build into prices or order value, or carrier-calculated rates that charge the real label price at checkout. Our suggestion for a small store with similar-sized products is a flat rate plus a free-shipping threshold; carrier-calculated rates fit catalogs where weight and size vary a lot. Whatever you choose, check the rates Shopify created when you opened the store, because they often include a free rate you never decided on.

Strategy options and settings come from Shopify’s Help Center pages on shipping strategy, shipping zones and rates, shipping profiles and third-party carrier-calculated shipping (read October 23, 2026). The threshold example uses our numbers.

Check the default rates first

When a store is set up, Shopify creates domestic and international rates automatically, based on where the store is. Shopify notes that those default rates frequently include a free shipping rate. Before your first order, open Settings > Shipping and delivery, go through every zone in the General profile, and delete or edit anything you did not choose. A free international rate left from setup can make an overseas order cost more than it earns.

Three strategies compared

Flat rate Free shipping Carrier-calculated
What the customer sees A fixed price you set, optionally by order value or weight No shipping charge, often above an order value The carrier’s price for that parcel, at checkout
What it is good at Clear expectations before checkout; delivery dates with transit and processing times; discounted shipping above a cart value Shopify says displaying it early can drive sales and it can raise cart conversion; a threshold raises order value Exact costs, no estimating; customers pick the service they want
Drawback You estimate costs; heavy or far orders can cost more than you charge You carry the label cost in prices or margin Rates cannot be shown before checkout, which can surprise shoppers
Needs Rates in each zone A rate or discount, plus margin to cover it Shopify Shipping labels, built-in carrier integrations, or third-party calculated shipping (Advanced and Plus; Grow for a fee or annual billing)

Our rule of thumb:

  • Products of similar size and weight: flat rate, with free shipping above a threshold.
  • Wide range from envelopes to heavy boxes: flat rates by weight band, or carrier-calculated rates.
  • High-value single items: free shipping built into the price, so the product page shows one number.

You can combine them: Shopify allows a flat rate for most orders, a free rate above a cart value, and calculated rates for a heavy-goods profile.

Set a free-shipping threshold that pays

A threshold works when the extra items a customer adds pay for the label. A worked example with our numbers:

Input Value
Average order value today $42
Average label cost $8.40
Gross margin on products 50%
Extra order value needed to cover the label at 50% margin $16.80
Threshold about $60

At $60, an order that grows from $42 to $60 earns $9 more margin, which covers the $8.40 label. Orders already above $60 get free shipping they would have paid for, so check how many of your orders sit just below and just above the threshold before you set it.

Shopify offers two ways to make it work. A free rate with a price condition in a shipping zone (for example, free above $60) applies automatically. A free shipping discount (automatic or a code) can be limited by countries, a minimum purchase amount or quantity, eligible customers and usage limits, which suits a promotion rather than a permanent rule. Its minimum counts product prices only, at their discounted price.

Set it up

  1. Go to Settings > Shipping and delivery and open the General profile (or a custom profile for products that ship differently, such as oversized items; a product can be in only one profile).
  2. In Shipping zones, click Add zone if needed, name it, and select its countries or regions. A country must be in an active market before you can add a zone for it.
  3. Click Add shipping option for each rate:
    • a flat rate with a price, optionally with conditions on order price or weight;
    • a free rate with a minimum order price for the threshold;
    • carrier or app calculated rates if you use them.
  4. Wherever you use calculated rates, decide on a fallback. Backup rates appear only if calculated rates fail and no other rate is eligible, while a flat rate for the same destination is always shown next to the calculated rates.
  5. Click Save, then place a test order to see what customers see.

If products ship from more than one profile or location, rates can add up; combined shipping rates explains why and how to avoid it. Make sure your boxes are saved with real dimensions too, because weight-based and calculated rates use them; see package sizes in Shopify.

Local delivery and pickup

For customers close to you, two methods replace shipping altogether. Local delivery works by distance (up to 160 km or 100 miles) or postal codes, with up to 10 zones per location and your own prices. Pickup in store is set per location under Settings > Shipping and delivery > Pickup in store, with an expected pickup time shown at checkout. Price them from what they cost you (driver time or counter space) rather than from carrier rates.

For lowering what labels cost you, see reduce shipping costs; for other countries, Shopify international shipping. Returns and packaging are covered in the shipping and returns section.

FAQ

How much should I charge for shipping on Shopify? Start from your average label and packaging cost per order. Charge a flat rate close to that, or build it into prices and offer free shipping above a threshold your margin can carry.

What is the best shipping strategy for a small Shopify store? For similar-sized products, a flat rate plus free shipping above a threshold keeps prices predictable. Use carrier-calculated rates when parcel sizes vary widely.

Does Shopify set up shipping rates automatically? Shopify creates domestic and international rates when you set up a store, and they often include a free rate. Review them in Settings > Shipping and delivery before you take orders.
