Shopify for Local Businesses: Delivery, Pickup and POS

Updated , first published · 4 min read

Shopify for a local business rests on three settings: local delivery for customers within a radius or a list of postal codes, pickup in store for online orders, and Shopify POS for selling across the counter, all drawing on the same stock. Local delivery reaches up to 100 miles (160 km) from a location, and it works with Shop Pay but not with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay or PayPal, a limit worth knowing before you promote it. Getting found by nearby customers is a separate job, done mostly outside Shopify.

Local delivery

The rules come from Shopify’s Help Center page on local delivery, read on October 23, 2026. To set it up for a location:

  1. Go to Settings > Shipping and delivery and, under Additional delivery methods, click Local delivery.
  2. Click the location and switch on Deliver orders to customers directly from this location.
  3. Under Delivery zones, choose Set a delivery radius (or delivery by postal codes), pick the unit, and click Add zone.
  4. Name the zone, enter Delivery radius up to, an optional Minimum order price, and the Delivery price (enter 0 for free delivery). Add conditional pricing if you want, for example free delivery over $40.
  5. Add Delivery information for customers, such as delivery days, and click Save.

The limits that decide whether it works for you:

Rule What it means
Radius up to 100 miles (160 km), never across a border A shop near a border cannot deliver to the neighboring country with a radius
Up to 10 zones per location, 3 extra price rules per zone Enough for “town center free, suburbs $5”
Postal code zones up to 3,000 characters Long lists fit, but group them by area
The whole order must come from one location with stock Customers cannot mix shipped and locally delivered items in one order
Shop Pay works; Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay and PayPal do not A customer who picks one of those in the first checkout step does not see local delivery
B2B checkouts do not support it Wholesale orders need another method, or a B2B draft order with local delivery preselected
Customers must give a phone number and a verified address Checkout suggests verified addresses from Google

The wallet rule matters most for a store that relies on local delivery; Shopify’s page notes you can temporarily turn off accelerated checkouts if most of your business is local delivery or pickup. Everyone who prepares or marks orders delivered needs access to your Shopify admin, and you can deliver yourself or use a delivery service.

Pickup in store

Pickup lets customers buy online and collect at your shop. It needs at least one location that fulfills online orders and the latest checkout version, and you switch it on per location under Settings > Shipping and delivery > Pickup in store with an expected pickup time and pickup instructions for the Ready for pickup notification. Store transfers can move stock from another location when the pickup location is out, and a theme that supports pickup availability shows on the product page whether an item can be collected. Unlike local delivery, a customer can have some items shipped and some picked up in one order. The full setup is in local pickup on Shopify, and the delivery settings around it in the shipping and returns hub.

Sell in person with POS

Shopify POS turns the same admin into your till: orders and inventory sync between the shop, the online store and other channels, and you can also create local delivery orders from POS for a customer who buys in the shop and wants it brought home. The basic POS features come with every Shopify plan; what POS Pro adds, and the hardware you need, are in the Shopify POS guide.

Get found locally

Shopify handles the selling; nearby customers find you elsewhere first. Three steps cover most of it:

  1. A Google Business Profile with your shop’s address, opening hours, a link to the store and the pickup or delivery area. It is the listing people see in Google Maps.
  2. Your area named on the site: the towns or neighborhoods you deliver to on the shipping page and in the local delivery information text, so both customers and search engines see it.
  3. Products in Google through the Google & YouTube channel and Merchant Center, so searches for what you sell can show your products.

Food and drink shops are covered separately in sell food on Shopify.

Frequently asked questions

How far can Shopify local delivery reach? A delivery radius can be up to 100 miles (160 km) from the location, and it does not extend into other countries, even with neighboring states or regions included. You can use postal code zones instead for an irregular area.

Does local delivery work with Apple Pay? Shopify’s local delivery page says it works with Shop Pay but not with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay or PayPal. If a customer chooses one of those in the first checkout step, local delivery is not offered.

Can customers choose a delivery time? Shopify’s local delivery settings let you describe delivery days and times in the delivery information text, but the pages read for this article describe no time-slot picker. Booking a delivery slot at checkout needs a delivery-scheduling app.
