Dropshipping Ads on Shopify: Channels, Test Budget, Tracking

Updated , first published · 5 min read

Dropshipping ads on Shopify typically run on Meta (Facebook and Instagram), TikTok or Google, each connected through its own Shopify sales channel so your catalog syncs and purchases are tracked. Start with one channel, a small fixed test budget per product and a rule for when to stop, and make sure the delivery time your ads imply matches what your supplier actually ships. Whichever channel you pick, the deciding number is what one order costs you in ads against the margin it leaves.

The Shopify connections below come from the Help Center pages on Facebook and Instagram by Meta, the Meta pixel, TikTok setup, Google Performance Max and pixels, read on October 23, 2026. The budget example is ours.

Channels compared

Channel Where ads show Shopify connection Fits products that
Meta (Facebook, Instagram) Feeds, Stories, Reels Facebook and Instagram by Meta channel, free on all plans subject to eligibility; Meta pixel through the channel Can be shown in a short video or a photo carousel and bought on impulse
TikTok The TikTok feed; TikTok Shop TikTok sales channel; TikTok Shop only in the US, UK, Spain, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Mexico, Japan and Brazil Demonstrate well in a few seconds of video
Google (Search, Shopping, YouTube) Search results, Shopping, YouTube, Gmail, Maps Google & YouTube channel; Performance Max campaigns created in Google Merchant Center People already search for by name

Meta and TikTok put a product in front of people who weren’t looking for it, so the creative carries the sale; Google Shopping and Search reach people who typed a query, so price and delivery time carry it. And TikTok Shop has country limits and a return-policy requirement before you can sell there, while the ad platforms themselves reach more countries.

Before spending, look at what competitors run. Meta’s public Ad Library shows active ads by advertiser, and TikTok’s Creative Center shows ads and trends on TikTok; both can be browsed without running a campaign.

Connect ads to Shopify

Meta. Install the Facebook and Instagram by Meta channel. In its Share data settings, under Customer data-sharing, turn on data sharing, then click Create new to create a Meta pixel or Connect to connect one you have. You need a Facebook ad account connected to create ads. If a Meta pixel was pasted into your theme code earlier, remove it after the channel’s pixel is set up, or events are counted twice. Check in Facebook Ads Manager that the pixel works; data appears only after customers visit.

TikTok. Install the TikTok sales channel. TikTok Shop needs a verifiable address in Locations, an online store, a TikTok for Business account and a visible return policy page, and your products must meet TikTok’s prohibited-products rules for your region.

Google. Set up the Google & YouTube channel. Performance Max campaigns, which replaced Smart Shopping and run across YouTube, Search, Gmail and Maps, are created in Google Merchant Center from that channel; budgets are set in Google Ads.

Your own tracking. Shopify’s pixel manager, in the Customer events section of the admin, holds app pixels and custom pixels in one place and loads them on the storefront, checkout, thank-you and order status pages. Keep every pixel there instead of in theme code, so you can see what tracks what.

A first test budget

Ad costs vary too much by country, product and season for anyone to give you the right number. What you can set in advance is the rule. A worked example with illustrative numbers:

Line Example
Product price $35.00
Supplier price and shipping you pay $26.00
Payment fee (assume 3% + $0.30) $1.35
Margin before ads $7.65
Break-even ad cost per order $7.65
Test budget per product 3 × $7.65 = about $23

The kill rule: if the test budget is spent and there is no order, stop that product or that ad. If there are orders but each one cost more than $7.65 in ads, the product loses money at that price; raise the price, find a cheaper supplier or stop. Test three to five products this way before scaling any of them, and judge by orders and cost per order in Shopify and in the ad platform, side by side.

A product at this margin leaves little room for ads at all. Run the same table before you list a product, as described in how to price products on Shopify.

Promise only what the supplier delivers

An ad that says “Get it this week” for a product that takes three weeks from the supplier invites refund requests and disputes. Shopify’s dropshipping compliance page requires public processing and shipping information, and says you must communicate shipping times before the customer completes a purchase, so the ad, the product page and the shipping policy should give the same delivery time. Time your supplier’s real delivery with test orders first; how to vet a dropshipping supplier shows how. For organic social content alongside ads, see social media for dropshipping stores. Other guides on suppliers and delivery are in the shipping and returns hub.

FAQ

Which ads work best for Shopify dropshipping? No channel works best for every product. Meta and TikTok suit products that sell from a short video to people who weren’t searching, while Google Shopping and Search suit products people already search for by name.

How much should I spend to test a dropshipping product? We suggest a test budget of about three times the margin a single order leaves before ads. If that budget brings no order, stop; if orders cost more than the margin, the product loses money at that price.

Do I need a Meta pixel for Facebook ads from Shopify? The Facebook and Instagram by Meta channel lets you create or connect a Meta pixel once data sharing is on. Remove any older pixel code from your theme so purchases aren’t counted twice.

Can I sell on TikTok Shop from any country? TikTok Shop through Shopify is available to stores located in the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Mexico, Japan or Brazil, with a verifiable address and a return policy page.
