Shopify Bundle Types: Fixed, Multipack or Mix and Match?

Shopify recognizes three bundle types: a fixed bundle, made from a set list of products and variants; a multipack, with more than one of the same product; and a mix-and-match bundle, made of interchangeable products the customer picks. The free Shopify Bundles app builds the first two on every plan. Mix and match needs a third-party app, or the Bundles APIs on Shopify Plus.
The definitions, tools and limits come from Shopify’s Help Center pages on product bundles, bundle eligibility and considerations and Shopify Bundles, read on 23 and October 31, 2026. The choice rules at the end are ours.
The three types
| Fixed bundle | Multipack | Mix and match | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A predetermined set of products and variants | More than one of the same product | Interchangeable products the customer chooses |
| Example | Shampoo, conditioner and a towel as a gift set | A 3-pack of socks | Any 6 bars of soap from a scent collection |
| Built with | Shopify Bundles (free, all plans) | Shopify Bundles (free, all plans) | A third-party app, or Bundles APIs on Plus |
| Customer chooses | Variants, if you allow them | Variants, if you allow them | Which products, up to the bundle’s size |
| Google & YouTube channel | Yes | Not named; Shopify lists fixed bundles only | No |
In Shopify Bundles, a multipack is built like a fixed bundle that repeats one product: when you build the bundle, open the product’s menu and choose Duplicate product, or raise its quantity. You can also offer the quantity as an option with Add quantity as an option, so one bundle product sells as a 2-pack or a 3-pack.
The term “kit” isn’t a Shopify bundle type. As we use it, a kit is a fixed bundle that ships as one package, such as a starter kit, and you build it the same way. If you sell kits assembled in advance and stocked as their own item, that’s a regular product with its own inventory, not a bundle.
Which tool builds which
Shopify Bundles covers fixed bundles and multipacks. A fixed bundle can have up to 30 components and up to 2,000 units of each, with at most 3 options and 100 variants per bundle. Combine options with matching names lets the customer pick a shared option, such as size, once for the whole bundle. The steps to create one are in our guide to Shopify bundles.
For mix and match, Shopify points to third-party apps from the App Store, and to the Bundles APIs for custom bundles on Shopify Plus. When comparing apps, check whether they create bundle products, which follow the inventory and checkout rules below, or only add a discount to separate items.
A collection discount is the no-app workaround. An amount off discount on a collection, with a minimum quantity of items, gives a price break when the customer buys enough from that collection. The customer has no bundle to add to the cart, though, and the products stay separate lines; in our view a mix-and-match app makes the clearer offer.
Inventory and channels
A bundle has no stock of its own. Its availability comes from the products inside it: each product’s stock divided by its quantity in the bundle, rounded down, gives a count, and the lowest count sets how many bundles can be sold. Inventory updates in real time. Products that don’t track inventory, or that continue selling when out of stock, are left out of that calculation. Shopify Bundles tracks bundle inventory as overall stock, not by location.
On orders, SKUs are listed for the individual items, not the bundle, and the shipping weight is the sum of the items’ weights. A change to a component’s price doesn’t change the bundle’s price; update it by hand.
Bundles sell on the Online Store, Shop and Shopify POS, and on custom storefronts; on Google & YouTube, only fixed bundles. Some features don’t work with them at all:
- purchase options, including subscriptions, pre-orders and try-before-you-buy;
- custom products, and bundles inside bundles;
- exchanges;
- import, export and bulk editing of bundles;
- stores still using
checkout.liquidcustomizations, because bundles need the upgraded checkout.
Choose by product
Our rules of thumb:
- Products used together, in fixed amounts (a skincare routine, a coffee brewing set): a fixed bundle. It’s free, can sell on Google, and the set itself is the selling point.
- A consumable bought in quantity (socks, filters, soap): a multipack, with quantity as an option, so one product page offers several pack sizes.
- Variety the customer wants to choose (flavors, scents, a “build your own box”): mix and match through an app. Check that the app’s bundles count down the right inventory.
- You also sell subscriptions on the same products: keep subscription items out of bundles, since purchase options and the Shopify Subscriptions app don’t work with them; subscribe and save covers the subscription side.
Discount codes and automatic discounts work on bundles (which to use when is in automatic discount vs discount code), but a product or collection discount has to include the parent bundle product; selecting only the components won’t apply it. The discount is then split among the items by their share of the bundle’s price before tax, as covered with other pricing and sales topics.
FAQ
What types of bundles does Shopify support? Shopify describes fixed bundles, multipacks and mix-and-match bundles. The free Shopify Bundles app creates fixed bundles and multipacks on all plans.
Can Shopify Bundles do mix and match? Shopify Bundles doesn’t support mix-and-match bundles. Use a third-party app from the Shopify App Store, or the Bundles APIs on Shopify Plus.
How does inventory work for Shopify bundles? Bundles take their availability from their components, and the component with the lowest inventory decides how many bundles can be sold. Shopify Bundles tracks it as overall stock, not by location.
Can I sell bundles on Google Shopping? Shopify lists fixed product bundles as the only bundles you can sell on the Google & YouTube sales channel, so mix-and-match bundles can’t be sold there. Check a multipack in the channel before relying on it.
