Shopify Mobile Audit: A 20-Point Checklist by Shopping Step

Updated , first published · 4 min read

A Shopify mobile audit checks your store the way a phone shopper moves through it: landing page, collection, product page, cart and checkout, plus speed and layout at every screen width. Start from your own numbers to see where phone visitors drop off, run the 20 checks below on a real phone over mobile data, score each one, and fix the failures in the order of the shopping steps, starting nearest the checkout.

Start with numbers

Open Analytics and look at the Sessions by device report, which Shopify’s Help Center describes as showing the type of devices used to access your store. Then compare the funnel for mobile and desktop in the Conversion rate breakdown report, grouped by device type if your reports offer it: sessions, added to cart, reached checkout, completed. The step where mobile falls furthest behind desktop is where to look hardest.

For speed, open the Web Performance reports, which Shopify says use Core Web Vitals to measure how real users experience your online store. Shopify’s web performance page measures the three Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) for loading speed, Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) for visual stability, and Interaction to Next Paint (INP) for how fast the page responds to a tap. The same page names your theme, your apps and any third-party code you added, such as tag manager tags, as the biggest factors, and says poor INP most likely means too much JavaScript from one of them.

The 20-point audit

Test on a mid-range phone, not only a new one, with Wi-Fi off. Score each check 2 (works), 1 (works with friction) or 0 (fails); 40 is a full score.

Step Check
Landing 1. The first screen shows what you sell and a way to shop, without a popup covering it
2. The hero image is sized for phones and loads without a visible jump
3. The menu opens with one tap and lists your main collections
4. Search is visible or one tap away
Collection 5. Filters for size, color and price open in a drawer and apply without a reload delay
6. Product cards show price and a clear image at two per row
7. Long collections use pagination or load more, not hundreds of products at once
Product 8. The variant picker works with a thumb; selected options are obvious
9. Price, delivery estimate and returns link are visible near the add-to-cart button
10. Images can be swiped and zoomed
11. The add-to-cart button stays reachable while scrolling
12. Chat and review widgets do not cover the add-to-cart button
Cart 13. The cart shows the total, shipping cost or free shipping threshold, and a checkout button above the fold
14. Quantity and remove buttons are large enough to tap
15. Accelerated checkout buttons, such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, appear in the cart
Checkout 16. A test order on the phone completes, including a discount code
17. Address autocomplete and the keyboard type (numeric for phone and card) work
Speed and layout 18. LCP, CLS and INP in the web performance report are in the good range for mobile
19. No page scrolls sideways at any width from 320 pixels up
20. Text is readable without zooming, and the header does not wrap into two lines on tablets

We check our own sites at every width from 320 to 1,920 pixels after each layout change, because a header that looks fine at 390 and 1,440 pixels can break at 820.

Fix in this order

Start at the bottom of the funnel. A failing checkout or cart check costs every buyer who got that far, so fix checks 13 to 17 first. Product page failures come next, then collections, then the landing page. For speed problems, Shopify’s page suggests evaluating whether each installed app and third-party script creates enough value to offset its performance cost, so remove or replace the heaviest one and measure again. For the broader mobile design work behind these checks, see Shopify mobile optimization. If the LCP image is the problem, see lazy loading on Shopify; for whether an app would serve phone shoppers better than the site, see mobile app or mobile website. Both sit in the running a store hub.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my store’s mobile speed? Open the web performance report in your Shopify admin and read LCP, CLS and INP for mobile. They measure real users’ visits, so test a single page in a tool such as PageSpeed Insights when you need to find the cause.

Why is mobile conversion lower? A shopper may browse on a phone and buy later on a laptop, which shows up as a phone session without a sale, so some gap can be expected. Check where the gap is widest in the conversion report; a large drop at one step points at a problem on that step rather than at phone shopping in general.

How often should I audit? Run the full audit once a quarter, and run the checkout and speed checks after every theme update or new app, since Shopify’s Help Center names your theme and apps as the biggest factors in web performance.
