Shopify Mobile App or Mobile Website? Test Before You Pay

Updated , first published · 4 min read

When you choose between a Shopify mobile app and a mobile website, start with the website: every visitor reaches it from a search, an ad or an email without installing anything, and Theme Store themes adapt to phone screens. A branded app pays only when a large group of customers already buys from you again and again and you have a reason to reach them with push notifications. Between the two sits the free Shop app, which already gives your customers order tracking and Shop Pay in an app without you building one.

Start with the free Shop app

Shop is Shopify’s own shopping app. Its merchant page, read on October 31, 2026, lists it at $0 with no marketplace fees and says customers keep their carts between your online store and the app, check out with Shop Pay, and track their packages in real time. Shopify’s Help Center adds what happens after the order: customers can follow their delivery in the Shop app, and after delivery Shop asks them for a 1 to 5 star review of the product.

What you do as the merchant is set up the Shop channel and make sure the store meets Shop’s requirements; Shopify’s prepare for launch page notes that launching your store is one of the Shop merchant requirements, and that the Shop eligibility status can take up to 48 hours to update after launch. Your brand then has a place in an app your customers may already use, and you can see whether app shoppers matter for your store before paying for your own.

Five questions before a branded app

Answer these from your own reports before you request a quote:

  1. How many customers buy more than once? Open Analytics > Reports and look at the Returning customers and New vs returning customers reports. An app mainly reaches people who already know your store; if most of your orders come from first-time buyers, few of them will install it.
  2. How often do they buy? Food, coffee, cosmetics and pet supplies are reordered on a schedule; a sofa is not. Count orders per returning customer over 12 months.
  3. What would you send as a push notification? Name the messages: a new drop every Friday, back-in-stock alerts, a weekly offer. If you cannot name regular messages, email and SMS already cover it; see push notifications for Shopify for web push, which needs no app.
  4. Is your mobile site already fast and easy? An app will not fix a slow product page or a confusing checkout that your website visitors still use. Work through Shopify mobile optimization first.
  5. Can you pay for it for two years? Builders bill monthly, and you also need your own developer accounts: Apple’s Developer Program costs $99 a year and a Google Play developer account a one-time $25. Count the time you will spend getting customers to install it, through emails, the order status page and inserts in parcels.

Request a quote when the first three answers point the same way: many repeat buyers, reorders on a schedule, and news worth a push every week. Otherwise put the money into the website and email.

PWA vs native app builders

Typical cost Included in your Shopify plan A monthly app plan A monthly plan; Shopney’s start at $149

As a dated example of builder pricing, the Shopney listing, read on October 31, 2026, showed four plans from $149 to $1,299 a month, each with a 30-day free trial; push notifications, back-in-stock alerts and in-app chat start at the $149 plan, and abandoned-cart notifications at $299. Builders differ in what they include per plan and whether they add revenue share or per-order fees, so read the full pricing table and the contract before you sign. Ask how you get your app and its customer data back if you stop paying. The running a store hub collects the other mobile and operations guides, including the mobile audit.

Frequently asked questions

Do Shopify stores need an app? A Shopify store does not need its own app to sell on phones: the online store works there, and the free Shop app already gives customers tracking and Shop Pay. A branded app makes sense when many customers reorder often and you have regular news for push notifications.

How much does a Shopify mobile app cost? A builder charges a monthly plan; one example listing ranged from $149 to $1,299 a month in October 2026. Add Apple’s $99 a year and Google Play’s one-time $25 developer fees, plus the time to promote the app.

Is the Shop app free for merchants? Shopify’s merchant page for Shop lists it at $0 with no marketplace fees. For Shop Campaigns, its paid customer acquisition option, the page says “Only pay for what converts.”
