Shopify One-Page vs Three-Page Checkout: Which to Use

Updated , first published · 3 min read

Shopify’s one-page checkout puts contact, delivery and payment on a single page, and it is the default layout, so your store uses it unless someone switched it. The three-page checkout splits the same steps into information, shipping and payment pages. Both collect the same information, support the same customizations and report the same checkout analytics, so the choice is about how your customers move through checkout, and you can test it on your own traffic instead of guessing.

What’s different

One-page checkout Three-page checkout
Layout Contact, delivery and payment on one page Information, shipping, payment on three pages
Default Yes, on every store Available as an option
Information collected The same The same
Customizations and apps Supported, and they keep working when you switch Supported
Checkout analytics in the admin The same The same
Header and background image Different header layout; a checkout background image may need replacing The older header layout
Wording Adds new customizable text in Checkout & system in the theme content editor Uses the existing text

The rules come from Shopify’s Help Center page on one-page checkout, read on October 23, 2026. After a switch, act on two of them: if your checkout background image no longer displays well, Shopify suggests removing it and using a color instead, and if you changed checkout wording or added custom translations, check that they show as expected, because one-page checkout adds new text keys such as “Enter address manually”, “Add delivery instructions” and the shipping address title.

Switch the layout

  1. Go to Settings > Checkout.
  2. In Configurations, click Edit next to the configuration you want to change.
  3. In the checkout and accounts editor, click the gear icon to open the Settings sidebar.
  4. In Checkout layout, click the current layout and choose One-page checkout or Three-page checkout.
  5. Click Save.

The editor’s preview does not update in real time after a layout change. Open your storefront, add a product to the cart and go to checkout to see the new layout. Do it on a phone too, since that is where the difference in scrolling is largest.

Test it instead of guessing

Shopify Community threads include merchants reporting better and worse results after switching, which says more about their stores than about yours, so test it on your own traffic. Shopify’s Spring ’26 Edition lists A/B tests on the online store and checkout: you can publish a new theme, checkout configuration or customer accounts setup at a scheduled time or as an A/B test using Rollouts, under Markets > Rollouts.

A simple test plan:

  1. Prepare a checkout configuration with the other layout under Settings > Checkout > Configurations.
  2. On the Grow plan or higher, run it as a Rollouts A/B test (on Basic, compare periods instead) for at least two to four weeks, long enough to include a weekend and a normal promotion cycle.
  3. Compare completed checkouts against sessions that reached checkout, using the Conversion rate breakdown report under Analytics > Reports.
  4. Keep the winner and note the date. A session measurement change rolled out from 21 to September 23, 2026, so do not compare a test period with numbers from before that week.

Keep everything else steady during the test: a new shipping rate or a free-shipping threshold in the same weeks will move the numbers more than the layout. The wider checkout work, from shipping costs to payment methods, is in Shopify checkout optimization, and the phone side in Shopify mobile checkout. Other store settings guides are in the running a store hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is one-page checkout better? Shopify made it the default and says it collects the same information with the same customizations and analytics as three-page checkout. Whether it converts better for your store is a test question, which a Rollouts A/B test on your checkout configuration can answer.

Can I go back to three-page checkout? You can switch at any time under Settings > Checkout > Configurations > Edit, in the Checkout layout section of the editor’s settings. Your customizations keep working when you switch between layouts.

Do my checkout apps still work? Shopify says one-page checkout supports the same customization options as three-page checkout, and customizations continue to work when you switch. Check the checkout background image and any custom wording, which can display differently.
