Shopify Mobile Checkout: Settings for Phone Shoppers (2026)

Updated , first published · 4 min read

Shopify mobile checkout already adapts to phones; what you control is how little typing a phone shopper has to do. Turn on accelerated checkouts (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal) so they appear in the Express Checkout section at the top, consider buy buttons on product pages so shoppers can skip the cart, keep the default one-page layout, and remove whatever stands between the cart and the checkout button on a small screen. Then compare your numbers by device.

Settings and limits are quoted from the Help Center pages on accelerated checkouts, Shop Pay, one-page checkout and behavior reports, read on October 23, 2026. More checkout and conversion guides are in the running a store hub.

Check your mobile numbers first

Ask Sidekick in the admin; Shopify’s own example prompt is “Show my conversion rate by device type for the last 30 days”. Then open the Conversion rate breakdown report under Analytics > Reports and compare phone and desktop sessions at each step: added to cart, reached checkout, completed checkout. If phones drop at “reached checkout”, the problem is in the cart or before; if they drop between reached and completed checkout, it is in checkout itself.

Mobile checkout settings

  1. Accelerated checkout methods. Activate Shop Pay and the other methods your payment provider offers, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay and PayPal. Shopify shows them in an Express Checkout section at the beginning of checkout and orders them dynamically to show each customer the fastest method; if the customer’s account is detected for a method, Use your account appears. On a phone, that means a shopper can pay without typing a card number or an address.
  2. Shop Pay for returning customers. After a customer has used Shop Pay and verified once, their saved information works on any Shopify checkout with Shop Pay. A customer returning on the same device can check out without a passkey or SMS confirmation.
  3. Buy buttons on product pages. Some accelerated checkout methods can show buttons on product pages, letting customers skip the cart and go straight to checkout. Useful for single-item purchases; check that the buttons do not push the main Add to cart button off the first screen. Your theme decides where they sit.
  4. One-page checkout. It is Shopify’s default layout. Both layouts collect the same information, so keep one-page unless you have a reason to change.
  5. Fewer surprises. Show shipping costs or the free-shipping threshold before checkout, in the cart and on product pages, so the total does not jump on the last screen.
  6. A clean path from cart to checkout. On phones, cart drawers fill quickly with upsells, notes and messages. Keep the checkout button visible without scrolling, and the text readable at phone width.
  7. Local delivery and pickup. If you offer local delivery, note that it works with Shop Pay but not with other accelerated methods chosen at the first step of checkout. If local orders are most of your business, Shopify suggests you can temporarily turn off the other accelerated checkouts.

Test on a real phone

Use real phones rather than a desktop browser shrunk to phone width. Once a month, and after every theme or app change:

  • Add a product to the cart on an iPhone and an Android phone, on mobile data, not office Wi-Fi.
  • Check that nothing covers the checkout button: chat bubble, cookie banner, popup.
  • Go through checkout with Shop Pay and with Apple Pay or Google Pay, and once as a guest typing an address, to feel the slowest path.
  • Check that discount codes can be entered and removed easily.
  • Place a real order and refund it.

We test our own sites at every phone width after each change, because one theme or app update can move a button in a way you only see on a narrow screen. Checkout settings beyond mobile are covered in Shopify checkout optimization, and setting up the wallets in mobile wallets on Shopify.

What gets in the way on phones

  • A popup that opens on the cart or checkout path. Restrict popups to browsing pages.
  • Tiny tap targets in the cart drawer, such as quantity buttons crammed next to the remove link.
  • Hiding accelerated checkout buttons. Shopify warns that hiding them can lower conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify checkout work on mobile? Yes. Shopify’s checkout is responsive and works on phones without extra setup. What you add is the accelerated checkout methods, such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, that save mobile shoppers from typing.

How do I add Apple Pay to my Shopify checkout? Activate it as an accelerated checkout method with your payment provider; with Shopify Payments it is one of the available wallets. Shopify then shows it in the Express Checkout section, ordered dynamically for each customer. Our guide to mobile wallets has the setup.

Is one-page checkout better on mobile? One-page checkout is Shopify’s default and collects the same information as the three-page layout. On phones it keeps everything on one scrolling page; if you want to compare, test both with Shopify’s Rollouts, which can publish a checkout configuration as an A/B test.
