Apple Pay and Google Pay on Shopify: Setup and Buttons

To add Apple Pay and Google Pay to a Shopify store, go to Settings > Payments, click Manage in the section of your card payment provider (Shopify Payments for most stores) and switch them on in the Wallets section, which also holds Amazon Pay. Then turn on dynamic checkout buttons in the theme editor if you want a wallet button on product pages as well as at checkout. Both wallets are free to activate, and card payments made through them cost your usual processing rate.
The setup comes from Shopify’s guide to one-click checkout (updated September 3, 2026) and the Help Center pages on Apple Pay and Google Pay, the button behavior from the page on accelerated checkouts, all read in October 2026.
Turn the wallets on
- In the admin, go to Settings > Payments.
- In the Shopify Payments section, click Manage.
- In Wallets, activate Apple Pay and Google Pay. Amazon Pay sits in the same section if you want it too.
- Save, then open your store on a phone and check that the wallet appears at checkout.
Stores on Shopify Payments in France take a longer path for Apple Pay: Settings > Payments > Shopify Payments > Manage > Advanced settings > Manage, then Activate next to Apple Pay under Wallets. Google Pay is offered by Shopify Payments in every region except France. Apple Pay also needs SSL on your domain, and shoppers see it in Safari on a device compatible with Apple Pay.
Shopify Payments is the simple route because the wallets are part of its settings. If you take cards through another provider, the wallet options depend on what that provider offers: Shopify’s accelerated checkouts page says the buttons are available for Shop Pay and “other payment providers that offer the options”, so check your provider’s own list before you promise Apple Pay to anyone. How Shopify Payments itself is set up and what it costs is in our Shopify Payments guide.
Shop Pay works on the same principle and is free with Shopify Payments. It saves the shopper’s details across every Shopify store that offers it.
Where the buttons appear
There are three places, and each has its own rule.
| Place | What shows | What controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout | All active accelerated methods in an Express Checkout section at the top | Your payment settings; Shopify orders the buttons per shopper so the fastest method shows first |
| Product page | An accelerated checkout button next to Add to cart, which takes the shopper straight to checkout and skips the cart | The dynamic checkout buttons setting in the theme editor |
| Cart | Wallet buttons, where the theme shows them | The theme, your payment settings, the shopper’s location and device |
The checkout row is the one you do not configure: Shopify decides the order. If a shopper’s wallet account is detected, the button can read Use your account. Express buttons on the product page suit stores where most orders are one item, because the shopper buys without passing through the cart. For a store that relies on cart upsells or a free-shipping threshold, that skip has a cost, so look at your average items per order before you switch product-page buttons on.
To see what the wallets bring in, open the payments finance report and filter it by payment method. The wider checkout picture is in Shopify checkout optimization, and the phone-specific part in Shopify mobile checkout.
Button not showing?
Shopify’s guide says accelerated options appear depending on the store’s theme, payment settings, customer location and device.
| Symptom | Check first | Then |
|---|---|---|
| No wallet anywhere | Settings > Payments > Shopify Payments > Manage > Wallets: is it active and saved? | Confirm Shopify Payments is fully set up and not waiting on verification |
| Wallets at checkout, none on the product page | The dynamic checkout buttons setting in the theme editor’s product template | Older or third-party themes may name the setting differently or lack it; ask the theme developer |
| Apple Pay missing on one device | Test on an Apple device in Safari with a card in Apple Wallet | Wallets show only on supported browsers and mobile devices |
| Google Pay missing in one country | Your Shopify Payments country | Shopify Payments offers Google Pay in all regions except France; elsewhere, check that it is selected under Wallets |
| Only Shop Pay on the product page | Whether the checkout row shows the other wallets | If it does, the wallets work, and the product-page button depends on the theme and the shopper’s device |
Test with a real purchase on a phone and on a desktop browser, as Shopify’s guide suggests. Confirm the express row shows above the payment form and that product pages show the buy button. Refund the test order afterwards. The other store setup guides are collected in the running a store hub.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Shopify Payments for Apple Pay? Shopify Payments is the direct route, because Apple Pay and Google Pay are switched on in its Wallets section. With another card provider you can offer them only if that provider supports them in Shopify’s checkout.
Do wallets cost extra? Shopify’s Apple Pay and Google Pay pages say you pay no extra fees for accepting either wallet, and your provider’s standard processing fees apply. You pay the same rate as for a card typed in by hand.
Can I hide a wallet? On the checkout you can deactivate a wallet in the Wallets settings, which removes it for everyone. Hiding it only for certain customers or carts needs a custom app built with the Payment Customization API, which Shopify allows on the Plus plan, and Shopify warns that hiding accelerated options can lower conversion.
