AI for Shopify Dropshipping: What It Can and Can't Do

Updated , first published · 6 min read

AI for Shopify dropshipping starts inside your admin: Sidekick, Shopify’s built-in assistant, writes product descriptions, generates images, sets up discounts and segments, and drafts email campaigns, and it shows every change for your review before applying it. Paid AI apps add product research, ad creative and supplier automation on top. What AI can’t do is make a slow supplier fast or a weak product good, and anything it writes for your store is still your responsibility.

The Sidekick capabilities below come from Shopify’s Help Center pages on Sidekick, generating content with Sidekick and generating product descriptions, and the legal points from the dropshipping compliance page, all read on October 23, 2026.

Start with Sidekick

Sidekick runs in the Shopify admin on desktop and mobile, by text chat, voice or screen sharing. For a dropshipping store, these are the tasks it handles that otherwise go to separate tools:

  • Product descriptions. Every store that imports the same product gets the same supplier description, so rewriting it is the first job. In a product’s description box, the Sidekick icon writes a draft from your prompt; Shopify asks for at least the product title and two features or keywords, and gets better results with the product type, who it is for and the tone you want. It writes in any language Shopify supports, in the language of your prompt. Text generation doesn’t run on the iPhone or Android apps.
  • Images. Sidekick generates images from a prompt in the chat, in the file picker and in the file editor, where it can change an existing image. It can work from up to 3 reference photos under 5 MB each (JPEG, PNG, WebP). Nothing is added to your store until you click Save to files, and generation limits depend on your plan and are shared by everyone in the store.
  • Discounts, segments and reports. From a plain description, Sidekick creates amount-off and free-shipping discounts, customer segments, custom reports and Shopify Flow workflows. You review each one before it takes effect.
  • Email campaigns. In Shopify Messaging, it writes or edits email text, changes the design, adds generated images and recommends segments to send to.
  • Store design. In the theme editor it changes settings, adds sections your theme already has, and can generate new theme blocks.
  • Custom apps. On the Grow plan and higher, Sidekick can build a custom admin app from a description. Shopify’s example prompt is an app that recommends which products to reorder based on sales velocity.

Fields Sidekick fills in are highlighted in purple, so you can see what it changed before you accept it. Longer tasks keep running in the background after you close the chat. If you repeat a prompt often, such as “write a description in our voice from these supplier notes”, save it as a skill and run it with a shortcut.

For product research workflows, see Shopify product research; for the automation side (order routing, supplier sync, Flow), see dropshipping automation; and for content on social channels, social media for dropshipping stores.

Our suggestion for a new store is to do a month with Sidekick alone, and keep a list of the tasks it handled badly or not at all. That list is the brief for any paid tool, and it stops you paying for features Sidekick already covers.

What AI doesn’t fix

AI speeds up writing, design and analysis. The supplier’s performance and your legal duties stay where they were.

  1. Shipping speed and quality. The time from order to delivery, the packing and the defect rate belong to your supplier. They stay the same however good the product page is. What you can do is measure them with test orders and switch suppliers when they’re too slow; our guide to vetting a dropshipping supplier lists what to time.
  2. Product safety and compliance. Shopify’s compliance page says you must follow the laws that apply to a retailer of the product, you are responsible for offering safe products, and you could be held liable for products that don’t meet safety standards where they are shipped. That includes safety warnings and instructions in the official language of each place you sell. A generated description doesn’t check any of this.
  3. Claims in your copy. Shopify’s page on generated descriptions warns that generated text can include product benefits you never listed and facts based on content about similar products, and that you are responsible for the accuracy of everything you publish. For regulated products, an invented claim can be a legal problem, not only a returns problem.
  4. Images and rights. Generated images can be unexpected or low quality, and Shopify says it doesn’t support copyright or trademark infringement. An image that looks like a brand’s product, or adds a feature the real item lacks, creates disputes when the parcel arrives.

Review everything before it goes live

Our review pass for each product:

  1. Compare every claim in the description with the supplier’s specification sheet, and delete what you can’t confirm.
  2. Check sizes, materials and what’s in the box against a sample you have in hand.
  3. Make sure safety warnings and care instructions are present and in the customer’s language.
  4. Look at each generated image next to the supplier’s real photos.
  5. Read the price, compare-at price and shipping time shown on the page as the customer sees them.

Keep a note of what you changed in Sidekick’s drafts. Corrections that come up again and again are the instructions to add to your saved skill. Other guides on suppliers and fulfillment are in the shipping and returns hub.

FAQ

Does Shopify have built-in AI for dropshipping stores? Shopify’s built-in assistant, Sidekick, writes product descriptions and email copy, generates images, creates discounts, segments and reports, and on the Grow plan and higher builds custom apps. It works in any store, dropshipping or not.

What limits does Sidekick have? Image generation has a monthly and a short-term limit that depend on your plan and are shared by everyone in the store. Building custom apps needs the Grow plan or higher, and text generation doesn’t run in the iPhone or Android apps.

Can AI write my product descriptions? Sidekick drafts them from your prompt, and Shopify recommends giving it at least the product title and two features. Read every draft against the supplier’s specifications, because generated text can add benefits you never listed.

Am I responsible for what AI writes on my store? Shopify says you’re responsible for the accuracy of all content you publish, including generated text, and as a dropshipper you’re treated as the retailer of the products you sell.
