A Mobile App for Your Shopify Store: Shop App or Your Own?

Updated , first published · 5 min read

Every Shopify store already has a mobile app presence through Shop, Shopify’s free shopping app: your customers’ orders sync to it automatically, they track deliveries there with push notifications, and they can leave product reviews and receive your post-purchase offers. A branded app of your own, built with an app builder such as MageNative, Shopney or Tapcart, costs from $99 to $2,850 a month on the listings we checked and pays off only when customers buy from you often enough to keep your app on their phone.

What the Shop app already gives you

Shop is a channel you manage under Sales channels > Shop. Its App Store listing shows it as free, made by Shopify, with a 4.8 rating from 9,851 reviews on October 23, 2026. For a merchant, it does five things:

Feature What happens Where you manage it
Order sync Orders from your store appear in the customer’s Shop account automatically Nothing to set up
Order tracking Customers get status updates, push notifications for shipping milestones, live map tracking and estimated delivery dates Add tracking numbers when you fulfill
Track with Shop A link on your mobile order status page that sends customers to Shop for tracking Sales channels > Shop > Settings, then Manage in checkout settings in the Track with Shop section
Product reviews After delivery, Shop asks the buyer for a 1–5 star review with an optional comment of up to 1,000 characters; reviews show publicly on your product page in Shop The Shop channel
Post-purchase offer A returning-customer discount shown in the app, with optional push notification text Sales channels > Shop > Marketing > Create offer

Worth knowing before you rely on these features:

  • Only buyers can review. Shop accepts reviews only from customers who bought the product. If you already collect reviews with a supported review app, Shop can also display those.
  • One offer at a time. You can run one active post-purchase offer, and it needs direct selling turned on in the Shop channel. The discount can be free shipping, a fixed amount or a percentage, but you cannot restrict it to specific products, collections or customers. Create a separate discount code for the offer so its results stay clean; Shop reports who received it, orders and sales on a rolling 30-day basis.

The listing also describes a store page in Shop with video, custom headers and collections, and checkout inside Shop with Shop Pay. For a store with occasional buyers, this is the mobile app: it costs nothing, and customers may already have it installed for other stores.

When a branded app is worth it

A branded app makes sense when people buy from you often enough to keep a single-store app on their phone. Our own checklist:

  • Repeat purchases every few weeks. Coffee, supplements, pet food, beauty refills, fashion drops. An app for a store people buy from once a year gets deleted.
  • A list of customers who already come back. An app gives existing repeat buyers a faster way back to you.
  • Something only the app does. App-only discounts, early access to drops, a loyalty card. Without a reason, customers will not install it.
  • Budget for the subscription and the work. Someone has to design screens, write push notifications and answer app store reviews every month.

If none of these fit, spend the money on email and SMS instead; our guide to Shopify multichannel selling covers the channels that cost less.

App builders compared

App builders turn your Shopify catalog into an iOS and Android app without code. Three listings with public prices, as they showed on October 23, 2026:

MageNative Shopney Tapcart
First paid plan Starter, $99/month Silver, $149/month Growth, $500/month
Top listed plan Premium, $249/month Enterprise, $1,299/month Enterprise+, $2,850/month
Free trial 30 days 30 days Free App Studio and 7 days’ free use
Push notifications 5 on Starter, unlimited on Premium Unlimited from Silver Unlimited blocks and push notifications on Growth
Rating 4.8 (339 reviews) 5.0 (770) 4.7 (339)

What separates the plans is mostly push notifications: how many you can send, whether they can be automated (abandoned cart, back in stock) and whether you can target segments. Check those limits on the listing before comparing prices: with only a few manual notifications a month, the app can show your catalog but can hardly bring customers back. Each builder also lists different integrations (reviews, loyalty, subscriptions), so check that the apps you already use are on its list.

Get customers to install it

Customers install an app when you ask at the right moment and give them a reason. The places to ask:

  1. The order confirmation and shipping emails, with the reason to install (“track your order and get app-only offers”).
  2. The thank-you page and order status page, right after a purchase.
  3. A banner on your mobile site for returning visitors.
  4. An app-only offer, such as early access to a sale, announced by email.

Track installs and app orders separately in the builder’s analytics, and compare the revenue per app customer with the subscription cost every quarter. Push notifications are the main reason to have an app; our guide to Shopify push notifications covers what to send.
