Best Shopify Themes for Fashion: Swatches, Lookbooks, Free

The best Shopify theme for fashion shows color swatches on product and collection pages, lets shoppers filter by size and color, has lookbook sections for styled outfits, and offers quick buy from a collection. Shopify’s free themes Dawn and Colorblock list all of these. A paid theme earns its price with editorial layouts and image hotspots, but the swatches and size filters themselves depend on your catalog data as much as on the theme.
Theme features, prices and ratings are as the Shopify Theme Store showed them on October 23, 2026. How filters and variant options work comes from the Help Center pages on Search & Discovery filters and product variants, read the same day.
What a fashion theme needs
| Feature | Why clothing stores need it | Theme Store term |
|---|---|---|
| Color swatches | Shoppers pick by color first, often from the collection page | Color swatches, Swatch filters |
| Size and fit information | Fewer returns for “too small” | Size chart |
| Filters by size, color, price | Large collections are browsed, not searched | Product filtering and sorting |
| Styled outfits | Selling the second item: the top with the trousers | Lookbooks, Image hotspot |
| Fast add from a collection | Basics in several colors | Quick buy |
| Motion | How a fabric falls and moves | Product videos |
| Editorial pages | Campaigns and new-season drops | Wide layout, Slideshow |
Swatches and size filters come from your product data
In Shopify, a theme displays swatches and filters, but the colors and sizes come from your product data and the filters from Shopify’s Search & Discovery app. Twelve spellings of one color in your variants become twelve swatches in any theme.
How to set it up so it stays clean:
- Give each product a category from Shopify’s product taxonomy (for example a T-shirt category). Categories bring category metafields such as color, size, neckline and sleeve length.
- Connect variant options to category metafields. When you add the Color option, connect it to the color category metafield instead of typing free text. The values become reusable across products. Shopify’s own example: renaming “black” to “graphite” then happens once and updates everywhere it is connected.
- Create the filters in Search & Discovery. Standard filters (Availability, Category, Price, Product type, Tags, Vendor) are there for every store; add custom filters from product options or category metafields. If you already have option filters and move your options to category metafields, Shopify recommends replacing the old filters with category metafield filters.
- Check your theme supports filters: in the admin go to Content > Menus. If the theme does not support filtering, the Collection and search filters section says so.
The limits that matter for a fashion catalog:
- A product can have up to three options (for example color, size and length).
- Collections with more than 5,000 products show no filters. Split a big “Women” collection into Tops, Jeans, Boots.
- A store can have 25 filters in total, and each filter shows at most 100 values on the storefront. Twelve shades of “blue” across suppliers eat into that; group them.
- The Tags and Vendor filters are not translated, and the price filter does not show in currencies other than your default.
Fixing option names once at the data level also survives a theme change, because the next theme reads the same clean values.
Free Shopify themes for fashion
Both of these are made and supported by Shopify, and both list size chart, color swatches, filtering and sorting, quick buy, lookbooks and product videos:
| Theme | How the Theme Store describes it | Positive rating |
|---|---|---|
| Dawn | “A minimalist theme that lets product images take center stage” | 36% (291 reviews) |
| Colorblock | “A striking theme ideal for high-end fashion”, bold color blocks and a lookbook-style layout | 43% (7 reviews) |
The ratings are low. Colorblock has only seven reviews, so read them individually. Open the demo store on a phone and add a product with several colors and sizes to the cart before you decide; that is where fashion stores feel a theme’s weaknesses.
Paid fashion themes compared

| Prestige | Maestrooo | $400 | Size chart, product tabs, before/after slider, EU translations (EN, FR, IT, DE, ES) | 91% (873 reviews) |
| Impulse | Archetype Themes | $500 | Size chart, product tabs, promo tiles | 94% (1,304 reviews) |

The theme vendors’ own “best fashion theme” lists rank their own themes first, so build your shortlist from the features table above and try two or three themes in your admin.
Before you buy
Every paid theme can be tried in your own store with your own products before you pay, and the customizations carry over if you buy. The steps, the preview link and the limits on how many themes a store can hold are in our guide on how to try a Shopify theme before you buy. Theme choice is only half of a fashion store’s look; layout, navigation and photography are covered in Shopify fashion store design and product photography. The running a store hub has more.
Frequently asked questions
Which free Shopify theme is best for clothing? Dawn and Colorblock are both free Shopify themes with color swatches, a size chart, filters, quick buy and lookbooks. Colorblock is described as a fashion theme; Dawn is general-purpose and has far more reviews.
Do I need a paid theme for color swatches? No. Free Shopify themes such as Dawn and Colorblock list color swatches. What you need is clean variant data: options connected to category metafields so each color has one name across the catalog.
How many products can a Shopify filter handle? Filters do not display on collections with more than 5,000 products, and on search results they are based on the first 1,000 results. Split large collections into smaller ones to keep filters visible.
