Build a Brand Community Around Your Shopify Store

A brand community is a place where your customers talk to each other about what they make, cook, wear or grow with your products, with you in the room. For a small Shopify store, start with one place you can look after every week (a group on a platform your customers already use, your blog’s comments, or a regular email with replies), give it a few recurring rituals, and connect it to the store with a customer tag, a segment and a member discount.
Where the community lives
| Place | Good for | Cost to run | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A group on Facebook, Discord or similar | Daily conversation, photos, questions between customers | Moderation time every day | You don’t own the platform or the member list |
| Your blog with comments | Discussion under guides and recipes on your own site | An answer to every comment | Needs articles worth discussing |
| A newsletter that invites replies | Small, loyal audiences; a personal tone | One email a week or two | Conversation is one-to-one, not between members |
| In-person events or classes | Local brands, crafts, food | Organizing time and venue | Doesn’t scale beyond your area |
| A subreddit or forum | Enthusiast products with detailed questions | Moderation and rules | Slow to start; needs regular posts from you at first |
Pick the one where your customers already are, and where you or someone on the team will show up every week. Shopify’s content guidance says you don’t need to be on every channel and should choose a strategy you can sustain.
Blog comments are the cheapest to start, because they sit on your own store. Comments are set per blog: off by default for a new blog, on with your approval, or published automatically. Turn them on with approval for a blog where you post guides, and answer every comment; Shopify’s own advice is to keep the conversation going.
Our own rule for answering merchant questions in community forums is to say in every answer that we build Shopify apps. If you or your staff take part in other communities on behalf of the brand, do the same.
Rituals that keep it alive
Give members something recurring to show up for:
- A weekly thread: “Show us what you made”, “What’s in your garden this week”, with your own photo first.
- A monthly question that shapes the next product: colors, flavors, sizes. Then tell them what you did with the answers.
- Members first: new products shown to the community a few days before the public launch.
- Customer features: a member’s photo in your newsletter or on a product page, with their permission and credit; our guide to user-generated content covers asking for it.
- Live sessions: a Q&A or a demo, recorded for people who missed it.
Keep promotions to a small share of your own posts, and let members bring up the products in their own photos and questions.
Connect the community to the store
The community lives off-site, but your store can recognize its members:
- Tag members. Add a customer tag such as
communityto members who are customers, by hand or through a sign-up form that tags them. Shopify Forms can tag customers who sign up. - Build a segment. In the customer segment editor, create a segment of customers with the
communitytag. Use it for member emails and to see their orders. - Offer a member discount. A discount code can be limited to specific customers, up to 100 per code, or shared as a members-only code with an end date and usage limit. Count its use in the Sales by discount report.
- Invite from the order flow. A line in your shipping confirmation or packaging insert inviting customers to the community.
Your most active members are the natural candidates for a closer relationship; our guide to a brand ambassador program covers the next step. Other channels are covered in the marketing and SEO hub.
