Shopify Campaign Autopilot: What It Does, How to Control It

Updated , first published · 4 min read

Shopify Campaign Autopilot is a tool under Growth > Autopilot that uses your store’s products, customers and sales data to recommend and run marketing across Shopify Messaging, Shop Campaigns, Meta ads and Microsoft Advertising. It proposes “tactics” such as email automations, ad campaigns and acquisition offers; you approve or dismiss each one, or let it run on its own within guardrails you set: a monthly budget, a target return on ad spend, regions and languages. Autopilot itself is free; you pay for the emails, campaigns and ads it runs.

Facts come from the Shopify Help Center pages on Campaign Autopilot, its requirements and setup, read on October 23, 2026. When Shopify renamed the Marketing tab to Growth in June 2026, its changelog listed Autopilot as being in early access.

What Autopilot does

Autopilot works through the channels you connect:

Channel What Autopilot can run Who bills it
Shopify Messaging Email tactics and automations, such as abandoned checkout recovery and welcome series, sent to customer segments Shopify, under Messaging’s normal email and SMS pricing
Shop Campaigns Customer acquisition offers in the Shop app Shopify, under Shop Campaigns pricing
Meta ads Advantage+ campaigns Meta, directly; not on your Shopify invoice
Microsoft Advertising Ad campaigns Microsoft, directly; not on your Shopify invoice

Email tactics appear in the Shopify Messaging app next to the campaigns and automations you create yourself, and automations Autopilot creates after you approve them are labeled there. Meta campaigns from Autopilot are separate from ads you create through the Facebook & Instagram channel.

Who can use it

Shopify lists these requirements:

  • Any Shopify plan except the Agentic plan.
  • Shopify Payments activated.
  • At least one product, a store that isn’t in private mode, shipping set up, and refund and shipping policies.
  • An account in good standing, and staff with the Marketing permission.

Each channel adds its own: the Shopify Messaging app installed for email tactics; Shop Campaigns eligibility for acquisition offers; a Meta Business Manager with billing and permissions completed for Meta ads; and a Microsoft Advertising account with billing and verification, in a region where Microsoft Advertising operates. Shopify checks eligibility periodically, and if your store stops qualifying, its tactics are paused.

Guardrails and approvals

Set these in Growth > Autopilot before anything runs:

  1. Connect channels. In Channels, click Connect for each channel you want Autopilot to use. Leave out the ones you don’t want it near.
  2. Set the monthly budget. In Budget, click Edit and enter your monthly ad spend. Shopify is explicit that this is a spend target, not a hard cap: because attribution on paid channels arrives late, Autopilot can sometimes spend above it. Set it below the most you could tolerate; the setup page says you can ask Shopify Support about a credit for overspend.
  3. Set the guardrails. In Guardrails, click Edit: a target return on ad spend, target regions and target languages for ads. Click Save.
  4. Choose permissions. In Permissions, click Edit and decide whether Autopilot runs email and ad tactics on its own or asks for your approval. For the first month, ask for approval.
  5. Review pending actions. Recommended tactics appear under Pending actions, each with its channel, audience, budget and schedule. Click Approve to run it, or Dismiss to drop it.

You can pause or stop activity at any time and manage individual tactics and campaigns. Check the budget against the actual spend in Meta and Microsoft each week, since those bills don’t appear on your Shopify invoice.

Two checks we would make on every proposed email tactic: whether it overlaps with an automation you already run (two welcome series to the same subscriber), and whether it includes a discount your margin can carry.

Autopilot or your own automations

Autopilot suits a store that has a subscriber list and products but no time to plan campaigns: it fills the gaps with standard tactics. Your own setup suits a store that already runs specific automations, has a clear voice, or uses discounts carefully. The two can run side by side, which is where the overlap check above matters.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify Campaign Autopilot free? Autopilot has no fee. You pay for what it runs: Shopify Messaging emails and SMS and Shop Campaigns under their own pricing, and Meta and Microsoft ad spend billed directly by those platforms.

Can Autopilot spend more than my budget? Shopify describes the monthly budget as a spend target, and says delayed attribution on paid channels can push spending above it.

Does Autopilot need my approval? That is your setting: in the Permissions section you decide whether Autopilot runs email and ad tactics on its own or asks for approval, and pending tactics can be approved or dismissed one by one.

Which plans can use Campaign Autopilot? All Shopify plans except the Agentic plan, as long as the store uses Shopify Payments and meets the other requirements, such as shipping and refund policies.
