Brand Ambassador Program for Shopify: Recruit and Reward

A brand ambassador program for a Shopify store turns your most loyal customers into a small, long-term group who recommend you, in return for perks such as early access, free products and a personal discount code for their friends. It differs from an affiliate program, where anyone can sign up for a commission, and from influencer deals, which are paid campaigns with creators. You find ambassadors in your own customer list with Shopify’s segments, give each one a code, and track what they bring in the Sales by discount report.
Ambassador, affiliate or influencer
| Ambassador | Affiliate | Influencer deal | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who | Existing customers who already love the product | Anyone who signs up, often site owners and creators | Creators with an audience |
| Relationship | Long-term, a small group | Open, often large | Per campaign |
| Reward | Perks, free products, early access, sometimes commission | Commission per sale | Product, fee or commission |
| What they do | Talk about you to friends and followers, give feedback, show up at launches | Link to you from their content | Post agreed content |
| Shopify tools | Customer segments, discount codes, tags | Collabs or an affiliate app | Codes, links, Collabs gifts |
Ambassadors recommend you to people who know them, after buying from you several times, so keep the program small enough that you know every member by name.
Find ambassadors among your customers
Start in Customers > Segments. Shopify’s segment editor builds a group from filters, and you can start from a template or an existing segment. Build one segment of candidates, for example:
- customers with three or more orders in the last 12 months;
- who are subscribed to email marketing;
- optionally, customers your review or referral app has tagged (the segment editor works with tags, not with review data directly).
Sort the list by amount spent or by last order date and read it. You are looking for people whose names you recognize: the customer who emails photos, the one who answered another customer’s question in your comments, the one who buys gifts for friends.
Invite 10 to 20 of them personally, by email from a real person at the store. Say why you picked them, what the program offers, what you’d ask in return (a post now and then, honest feedback on new products), and that they can say no. Our guide to customer segments covers the segment editor in more detail.
If some of your fans are creators with an audience, Shopify Collabs adds an application page on your store and handles gifts and commission payouts. Note that Collabs isn’t accepting new creator signups in October 2026, and works on all plans except Starter and Retail; our Shopify Collabs guide explains the setup.
Rewards and tracking
Rewards:
- Early access to new products, before the public launch.
- A free product from each new range, sent as a draft order discounted to zero so stock and cost are recorded.
- A personal discount code for friends and followers, such as
SAM-FRIENDS. Limit uses or set an end date if you need to cap the cost. - A say in the product: a private email or call before a launch, where their feedback changes something.
- Commission or store credit on orders with their code, if you want a cash element.
Tracking in Shopify:
- The Sales by discount report counts orders on each ambassador’s code.
- A customer tag such as
ambassadoron each member lets you build a segment for program emails and see their own orders. - A Shopify Flow workflow from the template library, Get notified when specific discount code is used, can alert you each time an ambassador’s code brings an order, so you can thank them the same day.
Review the program each quarter: orders per code, posts, feedback. Let members who have gone quiet step back, and ask the active ones what they would change. Our guide to influencer tracking compares apps if you later want commission tracking at scale.
Put it in writing
A one-page agreement for every ambassador:
- What they get, and when.
- What you ask, without quotas that turn friends into salespeople.
- Disclosure: in the US, the FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers says anyone with a relationship with a brand, including free products, must disclose it clearly in the post, and lists “ambassador” on its own as an unclear word. Ask for “ad” or a plain explanation.
- How either side can end it.

Frequently asked questions
What is a brand ambassador program? A small group of loyal customers who recommend your brand over the long term, in return for perks such as early access, free products and a personal discount code for their friends.
How do I find brand ambassadors on Shopify? Build a customer segment of repeat buyers who subscribe to your emails, read the list for people who already talk about your brand, and invite a few personally.
How do I track sales from brand ambassadors? Give each ambassador a personal discount code and read the Sales by discount report. Tag ambassadors as customers, and use a Shopify Flow template to get notified when a specific code is used.
Do brand ambassadors have to disclose that they get free products? In the US, yes. The FTC says free products count as a relationship that must be disclosed in the post, and “ambassador” on its own isn’t a clear disclosure.
