Meta Pixel on Shopify: Setup and Data-Sharing Levels

Updated , first published · 4 min read

To add the Meta pixel to a Shopify store, connect it inside Shopify’s free Facebook & Instagram channel under Settings > Share data settings, turn on data sharing and pick a level: Standard runs the pixel in the shopper’s browser only, while Enhanced and Maximum add Meta’s Conversions API, which sends purchases from Shopify’s servers to Meta and shares customer details such as name, email and phone number. You do not paste any code into your theme; if you did years ago, remove it.

Facts come from the Shopify Help Center pages on the Meta pixel, Facebook data sharing and the pixels manager, read on October 23, 2026.

Connect the pixel

  1. Install the Facebook & Instagram sales channel if you haven’t, and connect your Facebook account and business assets.
  2. Go to Sales channels > Facebook & Instagram, click Settings, then Share data settings.
  3. In Customer data-sharing, turn on Enable data-sharing.
  4. In Choose data-sharing level, select Standard, Enhanced or Maximum.
  5. Select your pixel from the list, or click Create new to make one. Connect links a pixel you created earlier in Facebook Ads Manager.
  6. Click Confirm.

To swap pixels later, open Settings in the channel and click Change in Share data settings.

Remove old pixel code. If someone pasted a Meta pixel into theme.liquid or added one in Online Store > Preferences in the past, delete it there. Shopify warns that two pixels on one store give duplicate or incorrect data in your reports. The same applies if an agency or another app also sends Meta events for you.

Standard, Enhanced or Maximum

Standard Enhanced Maximum
How data reaches Meta Meta pixel in the browser Meta pixel plus the Conversions API, server to server Same as Enhanced, with Meta’s latest advertising technology
Blocked by ad blockers Yes, a browser ad blocker can stop it The server-sent purchase event can’t be blocked by browser ad blockers Same as Enhanced
Customer information shared Browsing behavior Name, location, email address and phone number, plus behavior Same as Enhanced
What it means for ads Purchases from shoppers with ad blockers can go unrecorded The purchase event still arrives through the server Shopify describes it as updated with Meta’s latest advertising technology

With any level, the pixel tracks these events automatically: PageView, ViewContent, Search, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, AddPaymentInfo and Purchase. With Enhanced and Maximum, the Conversions API sends the purchase event from Shopify’s servers. Order values use the order’s total price, including duties, taxes and discounts.

Which to choose is a privacy decision as much as an advertising one. Shopify’s own words are that “data sharing is a choice”. Enhanced and Maximum give Meta more to match purchases to ads, and they hand over more of your customers’ personal data. If you sell to customers who would object, or your privacy policy promises little sharing, Standard is the honest setting.

Shopify adds app pixels through its pixels manager (Settings > Customer events) and runs them in a sandbox. In markets set to require consent, usually the EEA and the UK, pixels run only for visitors who gave the required permissions; by default a new pixel needs Marketing and Analytics permission. You configure regions under Customer privacy in your settings.

Once, after you connect the pixel:

  • Say it in the privacy policy. Name Meta, the data you share (behavior only, or name, email and phone with Enhanced and Maximum), and why. Shopify’s data-sharing page asks you to tell customers how their data is shared.
  • Check the consent banner shows in the regions that need it, and that declining actually stops the pixel. Open your store in a private window from one of those regions (or with a VPN), decline, and check that no Meta events arrive.

Test this after every theme or app change that touches tracking.

Check that events arrive

  1. Open Meta Events Manager for your pixel. New pixels show data only after customer activity, so browse your store first.
  2. Walk the funnel yourself: view a product, search, add to cart, start checkout. Each step should appear as its event.
  3. Place a real test order with a low-priced product and refund it. The Purchase event should show the order total.
  4. With Enhanced or Maximum, check in Events Manager whether the purchase also arrives from the server, since that is the part ad blockers can’t stop.
  5. Look for duplicates. Every purchase counted twice means an old pixel is still in the theme or another app sends events.

The pixel feeds your retargeting and audience building; see our guides to Facebook retargeting and Facebook ads targeting. Guides for other platforms are in the marketing and SEO hub.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add the Facebook pixel to Shopify? In the Facebook & Instagram channel, go to Settings > Share data settings, turn on data sharing, choose a level, select or create your pixel and confirm. No theme code is needed.

What is the difference between Standard and Maximum data sharing? Standard uses only the browser pixel and shares browsing behavior. Enhanced and Maximum add the Conversions API, which sends purchases from Shopify’s servers and shares customer details such as name, location, email and phone number.

Does Shopify support the Facebook Conversions API? Choosing Enhanced or Maximum data sharing in the Facebook & Instagram channel turns on the Conversions API for the purchase event.

Why does my store send duplicate Meta events? The usual cause is an old pixel still in the theme code or Online Store preferences, or another app also sends events. Remove the extra pixel so only the channel’s connection remains.
