Facebook Ads Targeting for Shopify: Advantage+ and Audiences

Updated , first published · 4 min read

Facebook ads targeting for a Shopify store now starts from Advantage+ audience, Meta’s default: you give it suggestions (a customer list, a lookalike, an age range, interests), it shows ads to people who match them first and then searches wider when it expects better results. Your store feeds it data through the synced catalog and the Meta pixel, both set up through Shopify’s free Facebook & Instagram channel. Manual targeting still has a place for exclusions, minimum ages and tests.

Meta facts come from Meta’s Advantage+ audience page; Shopify facts from the Help Center pages on the Meta pixel and Shopify Audiences; all read on October 23, 2026.

The audience types

Audience What it is Built from Use it for
Advantage+ audience Meta’s automated targeting, guided by your suggestions Your suggestions plus Meta’s data Most prospecting campaigns
Custom audience People who already interacted with you Your website visitors (via the pixel), customer lists, engagement on Facebook and Instagram Retargeting and excluding existing customers
Lookalike audience New people who resemble a custom audience A source custom audience Prospecting from your best customers
Detailed targeting Interests, demographics, behaviors Meta’s data Suggestions, or narrow tests
Shopify Audiences Lists of likely buyers built by Shopify and exported to Meta Shopify’s network data Eligible Shopify Plus stores in the US and Canada

Meta describes Advantage+ audience this way: it prioritizes people who match the parameters you set, then looks for people “most interested in your products beyond your targeting parameters”. You can add custom audiences, lookalikes, age, gender and detailed targeting as suggestions, and Meta says you can specify criteria the system must not change.

Feed Meta your Shopify data

Three of the signals Advantage+ works from come from Shopify:

1. The catalog. The Facebook & Instagram channel syncs your products to a Meta catalog and keeps it updated when you change products in Shopify. Ads that show products from the catalog, such as carousel and collection ads, use it directly.

2. The pixel. In Sales channels > Facebook & Instagram > Settings > Share data settings, turn on data sharing and choose a level. Standard sends customer behavior only; Enhanced and Maximum add customer information such as name, location and email address. The pixel’s events are what Meta uses to build website custom audiences (“viewed a product in the last 30 days”, “added to cart but didn’t buy”) and to learn who converts. If an old pixel is pasted into your theme, remove it, as Shopify warns, or your reports will double count. Our guide to the Meta pixel for Shopify goes through the levels and checks.

3. Shopify Audiences (Plus stores only). If your store is on Shopify Plus, uses Shopify Payments and is based in the US or Canada, the Shopify Audiences app generates lists of people likely to buy from you and exports them to your ad account. Meta is one of six supported platforms, alongside Google, Criteo, Pinterest, Snapchat and TikTok. It needs Shopify Network Intelligence turned on.

Customer lists you upload yourself, such as past buyers, are another custom audience source. Use them with care: only customers who agreed to marketing, and in line with your privacy policy.

Consent affects all of this. In markets that require it, usually the EEA and the UK, Shopify runs pixels only for visitors who gave permission, so your website audiences there will be smaller than your traffic.

When manual targeting still helps

Advantage+ handles most prospecting, but these settings stay useful:

  • Exclusions: exclude recent purchasers from prospecting campaigns, so you are not paying to show a first-order offer to people who just bought. Meta lists excluding custom audiences among its audience controls.
  • Minimum age and language: set them when the law or your product requires it, for example for age-restricted products. Meta lists both as audience controls.
  • Location: ship only to some countries? Restrict the ad to them.
  • Tests: to learn which customer group responds, run two ad sets with different suggestions (a lookalike of repeat customers against one of all buyers) and compare cost per order in Shopify.

Retargeting people who visited but didn’t buy is its own subject; our guide to Facebook ads retargeting covers it, and our guide to the Facebook ad budget covers how much to spend while Advantage+ learns. The marketing and SEO hub collects our other channel guides.
