Automate Loyalty on Shopify: Flow, Segments, Store Credit

You can automate a simple customer loyalty program on Shopify without a loyalty app by combining three free tools: customer segments that group buyers by orders and spend, Shopify Flow workflows that tag customers and react to their orders, and store credit as the reward. Shopify Messaging then sends the VIP welcome and the win-back email. A points balance customers can see, a rewards page and referral codes need a loyalty app.
What you can automate without a loyalty app
Shopify Flow is a free app on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, built from triggers, conditions and actions. Shopify’s Flow workflow examples, read on October 23, 2026, include two that are loyalty programs in miniature: organize customers by lifetime spend tiers, and send a handwritten note after a customer places a second order. Customer segments are rule-based lists that update themselves as customers meet or leave the rules. Store credit is issued to a customer’s account, with an optional expiration date where your local law allows one, and each customer account holds less than $15,000 USD. Customers spend it at checkout once Apply store credit is turned on in the checkout’s payments settings, when they sign in through customer accounts or use Shop Pay, according to Shopify’s store credit page.
Five loyalty recipes
| Recipe | Trigger | Condition | Action | Native? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VIP tiers by lifetime spend | Order created (Flow) | Customer’s total spent over your threshold | Add a VIP or tier tag |
Yes, Flow example |
| VIP welcome | Customer joins the VIP segment (Messaging) | Segment: tag VIP, or 3+ orders and $1,000 spent by default |
Send the Welcome VIP customers email | Yes, Messaging |
| Thank the second order | Order created (Flow) | Customer has exactly 2 orders | Tag the order for a handwritten note, or notify staff | Yes, Flow example |
| Reward after N orders | Order created (Flow) | Customer reaches your order count | Tag the customer; issue store credit from their profile, or try Flow’s Send Admin API request with the storeCreditAccountCredit mutation if your store’s mutation list shows it |
Partly; no dedicated store credit action |
| Win back lapsed customers | Customer joins a lapsed segment (Messaging) | No order for your chosen number of days | Send the Win back customers email with a code limited to the segment | Yes, Messaging |
The VIP segment defaults come from the Messaging automation Welcome VIP customers, which by default counts a customer as VIP after their third order and $1,000 USD in total spend, or a VIP tag. Change both numbers to fit your prices: for a store with a $30 average order, $1,000 is a very loyal customer; for a furniture store, it is one order.
Tiers by tag also feed discounts. Build a segment for each tier and limit a discount code to it, so a “Gold” code works only for Gold customers.
Test each workflow on yourself first: create a test customer, place test orders and watch the tags and emails arrive. If your recipe reads a customer’s store credit balance, check that value in a test run before you rely on it.
When a loyalty app is still needed
The recipes above reward customers, but customers cannot see a points balance or a progress bar toward the next tier, because Shopify has no native points system. You also need an app for:
- a rewards page or widget where customers see and redeem points,
- referral programs with unique links and rewards for both sides,
- points for actions other than orders, such as reviews or birthdays with a balance,
- tier benefits applied automatically at checkout beyond a tagged discount code.
A practical path is to start with the native recipes, see whether repeat orders move in the cohort report, and add an app once the program has proved itself. Apps are compared in Shopify loyalty program apps, and the numbers to judge them by in loyalty metrics. Flow is where we would start a small store’s automation. Other operations guides are in the running a store hub.
Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify Flow give store credit? Flow’s action list, as read on October 31, 2026, has no dedicated store credit action. Its Send Admin API request action can use most Admin API mutations, and the Admin API’s storeCreditAccountCredit mutation adds funds to a customer’s store credit account, so a fully automatic reward should be possible. Check that the mutation appears in the action’s mutation list on your store, and test it on a test customer first. Without that, Flow tags the customers who qualify and you issue the credit from each customer’s profile.
Is Shopify Flow free? Shopify Flow is a free app on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. Shopify notes that some Flow features are limited to certain plans.
Can I build VIP tiers without an app? You can tag customers by lifetime spend with Flow, group them into segments, and give each segment its own discount and welcome email. Customers will not see a tier badge or progress bar without a loyalty app.
