Social Media Content Calendar for a Shopify Store

A social media content calendar for a Shopify store is a table of what you will post, where and when, planned a few weeks ahead and filled from your own store: new products, bestsellers, reviews, blog posts and sale dates. Each row is one post with its channel, format, date, the product it points to and a tagged link. Shopify’s own content guidance recommends planning in a calendar and choosing a mix of recurring formats you can keep up, rather than posting whenever there is time.
The columns you need
Use a spreadsheet; one row per post. These are the columns we use for our own weekly batch of posts:
| Column | What goes in it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Date and time | When it goes out | Tue Nov 10, 18:00 |
| Channel | One platform per row, even for the same idea | |
| Format | Post, carousel, Reel or short video, story, live | Carousel |
| Content type | From your content mix (below) | Education |
| Topic | One line | 3 ways to wear the linen scarf |
| Product or page | What the post points to | /products/linen-scarf |
| Tagged link | The link with UTM parameters | ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=2026-11-scarf |
| Assets | Photo or video file, caption draft | scarf-carousel-1..5.jpg |
| Status | Idea, draft, approved, scheduled, posted | Approved |
| Result | Filled in a week later: link clicks, orders | 42 sessions, 2 orders |
“Approved” is a separate status because in our own process, nothing is posted until the owner has approved that week’s batch. And “Result” shows you, a month later, which posts brought visits and orders.
A weekly rhythm
Shopify’s content marketing page suggests a mix of recurring formats: news, inspiration, education, product promotion, contests, customer or influencer features, community events, Q&A and behind-the-scenes. Pick four or five that fit your products and give each a regular slot. A rhythm for a small store posting four or five times a week on one or two channels:
| Day | Content type | Example for a home-goods store |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Education | How to clean a linen tablecloth without shrinking it |
| Tuesday | Product promotion | The new color, photographed in a real kitchen |
| Wednesday | Customer feature | A customer’s photo, with their permission and credit |
| Thursday | Behind the scenes | Packing orders, a supplier visit, a sample that failed |
| Friday or weekend | Q&A or short video | The question customers asked most this week, answered in 30 seconds |
Adjust the count to what you can sustain. Shopify’s guidance says a predictable schedule helps customers know what to expect, and you don’t need to be on every channel.
Don’t post the same thing everywhere. Shopify recommends coordinating content so each channel tells a different part of the story, for example an Instagram post about your staff that leads to your About page.
Plan bigger dates on top of the weekly rhythm: product launches, sales and holidays. Our ecommerce marketing calendar lists the 2027 dates and how far ahead to prepare each one.
Fill it from Shopify
Your admin already holds most of next month’s ideas:
- New and upcoming products. Every product added in the last month is a post; an upcoming one is a teaser.
- Bestsellers. Your sales reports by product show what people already buy. Feature them regularly, not only at launch.
- Reviews. A new review with a photo is a customer feature, with the reviewer’s permission.
- Questions. Customer emails and chat conversations in Shopify Inbox show what people want to know. Each frequent question is an education post.
- Blog posts. Each article becomes two or three posts that point to it. Our guide to content marketing for Shopify covers writing them.
- Sale dates. Discounts with start and end dates belong in the calendar the day you create them.
To post a product quickly, open it in Products and click Share: Shopify can share a product page directly to Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, LinkedIn and Pinterest, or copy the link. Your store can’t be in private mode for this. For campaign posts, replace the plain link with the tagged one from the calendar.
Track what works
Give every post a link with UTM parameters, using the same scheme each week: the platform as utm_source, social as utm_medium, and a dated campaign name. Shopify counts visits with a utm_campaign parameter as marketing, so each post or series shows in the Channel performance report in the Growth section with its sessions and orders.
Once a month, sort the calendar by the Result column. Content types that bring visits and orders get more slots next month; types that bring neither get fewer. Keep one experimental slot a week for something new. The marketing and SEO hub has guides for each social channel.

Frequently asked questions
What should a social media content calendar include? The date, channel, format, content type, topic, the product or page it points to, a tagged link, the assets, a status column and a result column filled in a week after posting.
How often should a Shopify store post on social media? As often as you can sustain. Shopify’s guidance stresses a predictable schedule and says you don’t need to be on every channel; four or five posts a week on one or two channels is a workable start for a small store.
Can I share products to social media from Shopify? Open the product in your admin and click Share to post to Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, LinkedIn or Pinterest, or copy the link. The store can’t be in private mode.
