Podcast Marketing for Shopify Brands: Sponsor or Start One

Updated , first published · 4 min read

Podcast marketing for a Shopify brand means either paying a show to talk about your product (a sponsorship or “ad read”) or starting your own show. Sponsoring is faster and easier to measure; your own podcast builds an audience slowly and works only if you can publish for a year. Either way, listeners can’t click, so tracking in Shopify depends on what they remember: a short discount code and a short web address that you set up as a redirect.

Sponsor a show Start your own
What you get A host recommending your product to an audience that already exists A channel you control and an archive of episodes
Time to first result The week the episode airs Months; the audience has to grow first
Cost A fee per episode or per read Your time, editing, hosting, often guests
Measurement Code and vanity URL per show Downloads, plus codes mentioned in episodes
Fits Products with a clear audience that a host already speaks to Brands with expertise to share every week, such as coffee roasting, gardening, fitness

Start with sponsorships. A few reads on shows your customers listen to tell you within weeks whether podcast listeners buy from you. Start a show only if you would keep making it for a year regardless of sales, since a new show starts with no audience.

Pick a show and buy a read

Find shows your customers already listen to. Ask them. A one-line question in your post-purchase email (“Which podcasts do you listen to?”) gives you a list of shows your buyers actually hear. Then listen to two or three episodes of each candidate.

Prefer host reads. A host who uses your product and talks about it in their own words is the format worth paying for. Send the product weeks ahead.

Agree the details in writing:

  1. Number of episodes and where in the episode the read runs (start, middle or end).
  2. The talking points: what the product is, the one thing to say about it, and claims the host must not make.
  3. The code and the web address, spelled out the way the host will say them.
  4. Disclosure: in the US, the FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers says disclosures must be part of the endorsement itself; in a podcast, the host says it in the read.
  5. Whether you can reuse the audio or video clip in your own marketing.

Test small. Buy one or two episodes on two or three shows rather than a long run on one. Episodes can keep being downloaded after release, so judge each show after a month rather than after a week.

Track it in Shopify

Listeners hear the offer while driving or cooking, so make both tracking tools easy to say and remember.

1. One discount code per show. In Discounts, create a code named after the show, for example GARDENPOD. Avoid special characters, which Shopify warns can break the code in checkout links. Give it a usage limit or end date if you want to cap the cost. Every order with the code appears in the Sales by discount report, which is your main sales number for each show.

2. One vanity URL per show. Create a short address such as yourstore.com/gardenpod that the host can say out loud, and point it to a landing page or product page with UTM parameters, for example /products/seed-kit?utm_source=gardenpod&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=2026-11-spring. In Shopify, set it up as a URL redirect. Shopify’s rules for redirects: the short address must be one that doesn’t already load a page (redirects work only from broken URLs), and it can’t start with reserved prefixes such as /apps, /cart, /orders or /shop, or use fixed Shopify paths such as /collections/all. Test the redirect in a browser before the episode airs.

3. Read both reports. Visits through the vanity URL carry the UTM campaign, so they appear in the Channel performance report in Growth with sessions and orders. Orders with the code appear in Sales by discount. Some listeners will use the code without visiting the vanity URL, and some will type your store name into Google and use neither; expect the tracked numbers to undercount, and compare your direct and search traffic in the weeks after each episode.

Then cost per order per show is the fee divided by the orders you can attribute to it. Frequently asked questions

How do I track podcast sponsorship sales on Shopify? Give each show its own discount code and a short vanity URL that redirects to your product page with UTM parameters. Shopify’s Sales by discount report counts the code, and the marketing reports show visits and orders from the URL.

How do I create a vanity URL in Shopify? Create a URL redirect from a short path that doesn’t already exist, such as /podcastname, to your product or landing page. Shopify only redirects from broken URLs and doesn’t allow reserved prefixes such as /apps or /cart as the source.

Should a small brand start its own podcast? It makes sense if you can publish regularly for a long time and have expertise people want to hear. Sponsoring existing shows is the faster way to find out whether podcast listeners buy from you.
