Carbon-Neutral Shipping on Shopify With the Planet App

Updated , first published · 4 min read

Carbon-neutral shipping on Shopify runs through Planet, Shopify’s own app. It makes shipments carbon neutral by funding companies that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it. You choose between two subscription options: pay to make all your shipments carbon neutral, or let customers opt in and pay $0.50 USD for carbon-neutral shipping at checkout. A badge on your store shows the commitment, and the app’s analytics show how many shipments were covered and how much carbon was removed.

The facts below come from Shopify’s Help Center page on Planet, read on October 23, 2026. The customer price in this guide, $0.50 USD, is the one the Help Center showed on that date. The merchant price is on Planet’s App Store listing, which on October 31, 2026, showed the app as free to install with “3 subscription options ranging from $0.00 to $0.15 per order” and a rating of 3.3 from 76 reviews. The listing counts three options where the Help Center describes two, so read the plan names in the app before you subscribe.

How Planet works

To make a shipment carbon neutral, Planet funds companies that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it, based on a calculation of your shipping emissions. Shopify calls this carbon removal, and that is the word to use when you describe it on your store (see below).

The app has four parts:

  1. A subscription plan that decides who pays.
  2. A Planet badge for your online store, with two modes.
  3. A checkout extension for stores where customers contribute.
  4. Analytics: carbon-neutral shipments and carbon removed.

Shopify’s Help Center has a separate page on how shipping emissions are calculated; read it before you put numbers on your store, since the figures customers see come from that calculation.

Who pays: two options

You pay for all shipments Customers opt in
Who pays Your store, for every shipment Each customer who chooses it, $0.50 USD at checkout
What customers see A Planet badge on your store; marketing mode shows your climate impact A Planet badge; engagement mode lets customers contribute at checkout
What you can say Every shipment from your store is carbon neutral Customers can choose carbon-neutral shipping
Cost The price the app shows for your plan; the listing names no plan prices Customers pay $0.50 USD for the shipments they opt in
Fits Brands where sustainability is part of the promise Stores testing whether customers care enough to pay

In our view, the opt-in option is the cheaper experiment, since the $0.50 is visible at checkout and the analytics show how many customers take it. If few do, the claim isn’t a selling point for your audience. If you sell on sustainability, paying for all shipments lets you make the stronger, simpler statement on every page. Before choosing it, multiply your monthly order count by the per-order price the app shows for that plan.

Set it up

  1. Install Planet from the Shopify App Store.
  2. Choose your subscription plan: all shipments, or customer opt-in. You can change it later from the app.
  3. Add the Planet badge to your online store and pick the mode: marketing mode shows your impact, engagement mode invites customers to contribute.
  4. For the opt-in plan, add the Planet checkout extension so customers can choose carbon-neutral shipping at checkout.
  5. Place a test order and check that the badge, the checkout option and the order all show what you expect.

The analytics fill up as orders ship. After a month, the number of carbon-neutral shipments and the carbon removed are figures you can quote, with their date.

Say it accurately

The wording on your store should match what Planet does, nothing more:

  • “Shipping on every order is carbon neutral through Shopify Planet” is accurate on the all-shipments plan.
  • “Choose carbon-neutral shipping at checkout for $0.50” is accurate on the opt-in plan.
  • “Carbon removal” matches how Shopify describes Planet. Avoid “zero emissions”, “climate positive” or “eco-friendly delivery”: the parcel is still carried by a truck or a plane, and Planet funds removal of the equivalent carbon.
  • Quote numbers from your own analytics with the date (“1,240 carbon-neutral shipments since March 2026”), not round figures you can’t show.

Shopify’s consumer protection guidance says claims about your products and services must be true, and notes that some jurisdictions impose stricter requirements on marketing claims. Check the rules where you sell before publishing a sustainability page.

Packaging is the other half of a lower-impact delivery; materials and suppliers are covered in sustainable packaging, and rates and carriers in Shopify shipping strategy. Both sit in the shipping and returns hub.

FAQ

How much does carbon-neutral shipping cost on Shopify? With the opt-in plan, customers pay $0.50 USD per order at checkout, as Shopify’s Help Center showed on October 23, 2026. For your own share, Planet’s listing showed three subscription options ranging from $0.00 to $0.15 per order on October 31, 2026, billed in USD, without saying which option costs what; the app shows the price of each before you subscribe.

Does Planet use carbon offsets? Shopify’s page doesn’t use the word offsets. It describes Planet as funding companies that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it, so describe it as carbon removal.

Can customers choose carbon-neutral shipping? On the opt-in plan, the Planet checkout extension lets customers choose carbon-neutral shipping at checkout for $0.50 USD.

What does the Planet badge show? The badge has two modes: marketing mode shows your store’s climate impact, and engagement mode invites customers to contribute at checkout.
