WhatsApp Customer Support for Shopify: 3 Setups

Updated , first published · 4 min read

WhatsApp customer support on a Shopify store needs an app or a helpdesk: Shopify Inbox answers chats in your online store’s own widget, and Shopify Messaging uses WhatsApp for marketing campaigns, not for support conversations. You have three setups to choose from, by volume: a click-to-chat button that opens WhatsApp on the shopper’s phone, a WhatsApp app with a shared inbox on the WhatsApp Business API, or a helpdesk that handles WhatsApp next to email and chat.

What Shopify does with WhatsApp today

Shopify’s Spring ’26 Edition, read on October 31, 2026, added two WhatsApp features, both on the marketing side: you can create and manage WhatsApp marketing campaigns in Shopify Messaging, and WhatsApp marketing consent now sits in each customer’s profile next to email and SMS consent. The Shopify Messaging listing (4.8 from 4,761 reviews on October 31, 2026) describes sending email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns from Shopify, with ready-made WhatsApp templates; it publishes the email price (the first 10,000 emails a month free, then from $1 per 1,000) but not per-message prices for SMS or WhatsApp.

The Fall ’26 Edition (October 28, 2026) goes further on marketing: it adds collecting WhatsApp marketing consent at checkout and automated WhatsApp messages from Shopify Messaging for product browse, cart and checkout abandonment. None of the pages read for this article describes WhatsApp conversations in Shopify Inbox. Inbox and its AI agent work in your online store’s chat widget. So for a customer who writes “where is my order?” on WhatsApp, the reply comes from a WhatsApp app or a helpdesk, not from Shopify itself.

Three setups

Setup What the shopper sees What you use to reply Good for
Click-to-chat button A WhatsApp button on your store that opens a chat with your number The WhatsApp Business app on your phone A few chats a day, one person answering
WhatsApp app with a shared inbox The same button, plus order updates on WhatsApp The app’s inbox, several agents on one WhatsApp API number Daily volume, a small team, order notifications
Helpdesk with WhatsApp WhatsApp as one channel among email, chat and social One helpdesk inbox for every channel Several channels and a support team

Two App Store examples, as their listings showed them on October 31, 2026, show the price units:

  • SL: WhatsApp Chat + Marketing by SuperLemon, 3.5 from 347 reviews (218 five-star, 101 one-star). Free plan with a chat widget and manual messages; Automate at $9.99 a month sends cart recovery and order updates from a shared app number; Scale at $29.99 a month uses your own number through the WhatsApp API and adds a support inbox and Shopify Flow automation. WhatsApp message rates, the listing says, start from $0.015 on the paid plans.
  • WhatsApp by Meta, 4.4 from 931 reviews. Free to install, with order updates and abandoned cart messages; Meta may bill message charges separately from your Shopify invoice, at the rates on Meta’s pricing page.

The split in the SuperLemon reviews, almost a third of them one-star, is a reason to test the developer’s support before you commit. Helpdesks with a WhatsApp channel are compared in Shopify helpdesk apps.

Start with the button if you are not sure customers want WhatsApp. If it gets used daily, move to a shared inbox before the conversations outgrow one phone; a support channel that lives on the owner’s personal phone has no handover when that person is away.

Rules to follow

  • Consent for marketing. Promotions need marketing consent; order updates the customer expects do not. Shopify now stores WhatsApp marketing consent in the customer profile, so send campaigns only to customers who opted in there, and use the consent checkbox at checkout that the Fall ’26 Edition adds, or a Shopify Forms signup, to collect it.
  • Templates outside the reply window. On the WhatsApp Business API, messages a business starts outside an open conversation go out as templates that Meta approves; check how your app handles the approval. Expect to write order update and cart messages as templates, not free text.
  • Hours. State when someone answers on WhatsApp, the same way you set hours for store chat.
  • One record. Make sure the app links conversations to the Shopify customer and order, so the next person who answers can see the history.

For the store’s own chat, see live chat for Shopify; for WhatsApp campaigns next to email and SMS, see Shopify Messaging. Other support guides are in the running a store hub.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify Inbox support WhatsApp? The Shopify pages read for this article describe Inbox as your online store’s chat and do not list WhatsApp as an Inbox channel. WhatsApp support runs through a WhatsApp app or a helpdesk, while Shopify Messaging handles WhatsApp marketing.

Is WhatsApp Business API free? The apps that connect it to Shopify charge for their plans, and WhatsApp messages carry their own fees: SuperLemon’s listing says rates start from $0.015, and Meta’s own app says Meta may bill charges separately. Check the current rates for your customers’ country before you plan campaigns.

Can I send order updates on WhatsApp? Both apps above send order updates on WhatsApp: SuperLemon on its paid plans, Meta’s app with real-time and custom notifications. Customers should agree to receive them, and the messages go out as approved templates.
