Shopify Electronics Store: Theme, Specs and Filters Setup

Updated , first published · 6 min read

A Shopify electronics store works when shoppers can compare specs, filter a large catalog by what matters (screen size, connectivity, compatibility) and find the warranty before they ask. That means three things: specs stored as category metafields instead of paragraphs of text, filters set up in Shopify’s Search & Discovery app within its limits, and a theme with product tabs, a mega menu and filtering. Of the three, the theme takes the least time to get right.

Shopify facts below come from the Help Center pages on product categories, metafields, variants and Search & Discovery filters, read on October 23, 2026. Theme details are from the Shopify Theme Store on the same day.

What electronics shoppers check before buying

What they check Where your store answers it
Specs: size, power, ports, battery, connectivity A spec table on the product page, filled from metafields
“Will it work with my device?” A compatibility line in the specs and a filter for it
Which of two models to buy Comparable spec tables in the same order on every product, and collection filters
Warranty and returns A warranty section on the product page and a refund policy linked from checkout
Real-world quality Product reviews
Delivery date Shipping information near the Add to cart button

Most of these depend on data. A theme can lay out a spec table nicely, but only if every product has the same fields filled in.

Store specs as data, not as text

In a spec sheet pasted into the description, “Bluetooth 5.3” is just words. Stored as a metafield, it is a value that the theme can display in a table, that the filters can offer, and that you can edit in bulk. Shopify’s Standard Product Taxonomy provides the structure:

  1. Assign a product category to every product: Products > open the product > Category. Shopify suggests a category from the product’s name, description and images; accept it or pick the most specific one. Products without one are saved as uncategorized, which also happens when products are created by CSV or an app.
  2. Fill in the category metafields. Each category brings its own attributes. Shopify’s examples are for clothing, but electronics categories work the same way. The values are reusable across products.
  3. Add your own metafields for anything the category lacks, for example a “Warranty length” or “Compatible with” field.
  4. Show them in the theme. In themes that support dynamic sources, open the default product template in the theme editor, add a block such as a collapsible row or a table, and click Connect dynamic source to link it to the metafield. A block shows only on products that have a value, so one template works for the whole catalog.
  5. Connect variant options to category metafields where a spec is also a choice (color, storage size). The names then stay consistent across products.

The category does more than specs: Shopify uses it for tax rates with Shopify Tax, for selling on channels such as Google and Facebook, and for return reasons in your reports. One correct category per product feeds all of these at once, so it is the first field to fix.

Filters that work on a big catalog

Create filters in the Shopify Search & Discovery app. Standard filters (Availability, Category, Price, Product type, Tags, Vendor) exist for every store, and you can add custom filters from product options, product metafields, category metafields and variant metafields. Shopify’s limits:

  • Collections with more than 5,000 products do not display filters. Split “All accessories” into chargers, cables, cases.
  • A store can have 25 filters in total.
  • A filter shows at most 100 values on the storefront. Group similar values (“USB-C 60W” and “USB C 60 W” are one value).
  • On search results, filters are based on the first 1,000 results.
  • Each product can have up to three options; a laptop sold in color, storage and memory uses all three.
  • If your theme does not support filters, you can create them, but customers will not see them. Check under Content > Menus: a message in Collection and search filters tells you.

Choosing a theme for an electronics store

Look for these Theme Store features: Product tabs (specs, compatibility, warranty in separate tabs), Product filtering and sorting, Mega menu for many categories, Quick buy for accessories, Stock counter, and Product videos.

Theme Price Why it suits electronics Positive rating
Horizon (by Shopify) Free Filtering, quick buy, swatches, video; no product tabs on its list 36% (211 reviews)
Warehouse (Maestrooo) $320 Described as “Built for big catalogs and bold tech merchandising”; product tabs, mega menu, stock counter 84% (326 reviews)
Expanse (Archetype Themes) $420 For “large inventory” stores; product tabs, mega menu, image hotspot 93% (340 reviews)

Ratings and prices are as the Theme Store showed them on October 23, 2026. Try any paid theme in your store before buying; the steps are in our guide on how to try a Shopify theme before you buy. How the theme and the catalog data split the work for swatches and filters is explained in more depth in our guide to swatches and filters in fashion themes.

Warranty, returns and trust pages

Write your refund and shipping policies under Settings > Policies. Shopify links them from checkout, and you can add them to your store’s menus. Then:

  • Put the warranty length on every product as a metafield, shown near the price. If the manufacturer gives the warranty, say so and link to their page.
  • Add a FAQ page (Online Store > Pages) for the questions you get by email: chargers included, international plugs, firmware updates.
  • Before you set shipping rates, check your carrier’s rules for products with lithium batteries.

Example Shopify electronics stores

The lists of “top Shopify electronics stores” we found rest on third-party traffic estimates we cannot verify. The demo stores on each theme’s Theme Store page are a better way to see an electronics layout working: open one and click through it as a customer, then judge it with your own products in a theme preview.

More on catalog data is in the inventory and catalog hub, and store setup topics are in running a store.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell electronics on Shopify? Yes. Shopify stores sell electronics like any other physical product; check your carrier’s shipping rules for batteries and your country’s rules for product safety and warranty information.

What is the best Shopify theme for electronics? One with product tabs, filtering, a mega menu and quick buy. Warehouse describes itself as built for big catalogs and tech merchandising, and Shopify’s free Horizon covers filtering and quick buy for smaller stores.

How do I add a specs table to Shopify products? Store each spec as a metafield (or category metafield), then connect a block on your product template to those metafields in the theme editor with Connect dynamic source. Every product with values shows the table.

Do I need an app for product comparison? A side-by-side comparison view needs an app or a theme that includes one. Consistent spec tables and filters on every product already let shoppers compare models without an app.
